Argentina Reports Case of H1N1 in Swine Herd

In an official notification to the World Organization of Animal Health (OIE), Argentina’s National Service for Agriculture and Alimentary Sanitation (SENASA) is reporting a case of A/H1N1 influenza virus in swine located on a commercial pig farm in Buenos Aires (San Andres de Giles, San Andres de Giles).

The report describes the herd as a closed farrow to finish herd with its own internal restocking system. The last entry of animals occurred in July 2008. Between June 7 & 9, two workers exhibited "flu symptoms" but did not seek medical attention and there was no diagnostic sampling. On June 15th approximately 30 percent of the pigs were observed exhibiting clinical signs of illness but there has been no mortality. RT-PCR testing of diagnostic samples submitted to the laboratory confirmed the presence of A/H1N1 on June 24. Clinical signs reportedly have not been observed since June 24.

[Editor’s note: It is unclear in the official report if this virus is the novel A/H1N1 influenza pandemic virus currently circulating in the human population. The report only refers to it as an A/H1N1.]
