Animal health officials in San Salvador, El Salvador are reporting a new outbreak of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in San Miguel. The last reported occurrence of the disease was May 21, 2008.
The outbreak was confirmed on August 1 at the National Laboratory for Veterinary Diagnostics and Quality Control by ELISA and PCR. Fifty-seven animals in a breeding herd were exposed. Officials report that 54 of the animals exhibited clinical signs. Fifteen animals died and another 15 were euthanized. The remaining 27 animals were slaughtered.
Control measures, including stamping out, quarantine zones, disinfection and herd inspections, have been instituted. Vaccination is prohibited.
