ASF Suspected in Wild Boars in Chechen Republic

Russian media outlets are reporting an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in wild boars in the Chechen Republic.

According to news reports, a pack of wild boars was found dead along the border with Georgia during routine monitoring. Samples from the dead animals were reportedly positive for ASF virus.

[Ed. — There was no mention of where the testing was conducted or the testing methodology utilized. If this is, in fact, ASF it is concerning that it has entered the feral swine population. In its historic geographic distribution of sub-Saharan Africa and Sardinia, Italy, ASF has become endemic in the wild pig population which has adapted and can serve as a carrier for domestic swine.]
