Maverick Ranch Unveils Swine Welfare System

As an interim step toward offering only 100 percent organic meats by 2011, Maverick Ranch Natural and Organic Meats has developed a new hog farm protocol that it will use in partnership with several regional farmer co-ops and hog producer groups.

The Welfare Considerate Farming system eliminates gestation and farrowing crates and provides for additional bedding and living space so hogs can socialize in their own manner. It also prohibits antibiotics, growth enhancers and pesticides, in addition to guaranteeing that the animals are always vegetarian-fed.

Founded in 1986 and still family-owned, Denver-based Maverick Ranch has been marketing Maverick Ranch Natural Pork since 2001.
