Officials in Ecuador have reported a new outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).
The outbreak, which began on May 21, is the first reported in Ecuador since August, 2005. Veterinary Laboratory Izquieta Pérez, northern zone, the National laboratory, diagnosed FMD virus type O as the cause of the clinical signs observed in cattle in the Manabi region of the country on June 6.
The source of the outbreak is suspected to be the legal introduction and movement of live animals with further transmission resulting from fomite spread. Control measures, including vaccination, have been implemented.
