The AASV Pork Safety Committee, chaired by Dr. Julie Funk, met by conference call prior to the AASV Annual Meeting to discuss the impact swine veterinarians can have on pork safety issues.
After much discussion, the group developed a plan of work for 2007 to address issues associated with injection site concerns and the advent of alternative injection methods and sites. To explore these issues in detail, the committee elected to form two working groups.
The first working group, made up of committee members Jim McKean, Butch Baker and Tom Wetzell, will develop criteria for assessment of pork safety risk associated with alternate injection techniques and locations. The second group, consisting of Julie Funk, Scanlon Daniels, Liz Wagstrom and Steve Larsen, will work towards developing a survey to understand the current use of alternate injection technologies, alternate injection sites and the perceived need for these alternate methodologies in the industry.
A summary of the committee’s activities is available on their web page.
