Researchers have determined that feeding fish meal to pigs can produce pork rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
The study, conducted by University of South Australia researcher Dr. Alison Coates in conjunction with Bartlett Grain and Australian Pork, found that enriching pig feed with fish meal also lowered the amount of fat in pork.
Study participants were fed five 200g servings of the omega-3-rich pork each week for several weeks, with the results showing a reduction in triglyceride, or DHA fats. "There was an increase in the incorporation of good fats into cell membranes, and what that did was reduce the bad fats in circulation, which reduces the risk of heart disease," Dr Coates said.
