The Animal Health Directorate in Ankara, Turkey is reporting an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in cattle in Ogulpasa in the province of EDIRNE.
Clinical signs consistent with FMD were observed in 2 cattle in a herd of 1823 cattle and 1226 sheep on January 4, 2006. There has been no laboratory confirmation or serotyping of the disease. The source of the outbreak is reported to be an animal market. Vaccination is permitted but it is unclear if the susceptible animals had been vaccinated or if vaccine would be included in the control measures undertaken. Other control measures applied include quarantine, movement controls, modified stamping out, zoning and disinfection.
FMD was last reported in Turkey on June 3, 2006.
