The Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture in Amman, Jordan is reporting an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in a cattle herd in East Amman.
The outbreak is affecting a 1346 head cattle herd. 270 clinical cases have been identified resulting in 34 deaths according to the OIE report. The disease was confirmed at the National Animal Health Laboratory by virus isolation and RT-PCR on December 19, 2006. The virus has been identified as FMDV serotype A.
While FMDV serotype O is considered endemic in the region, serotype A has not been reported since 1978. The route of introduction is reported to be the legal movement of animals coming in contact with infected animals while grazing or watering. Vaccination is permitted and quarantines, animal movement restrictions and disinfection are being undertaken.
