NPB Funds PRRS Research

The National Pork Board (NPB) funded 18 PRRS research proposals totaling $1.5 million in 2006.

As a result of the NPB’s PRRS Initiative, thirteen institutions received funding for projects ranging from $4999 to $266,225. The PRRS-CAP December Newsletter provides a list of the projects funded.

The PRRS Initiative identified 4 broad aspects of the disease warranting significant research attention including: 1. vaccine development, immunology and genetics; 2. epidemiology and transmission; 3. diagnostics and monitoring; and 4. regional elimination. Following two calls for proposals, the Pork Board’s Swine Health Committee selected the 18 projects for funding.

The NPB has announced plans for a single call for PRRS research proposals in 2007. The call will be posted on the Pork Board website around March 15th with a deadline in mid April. The budget for proposals in 2007 is $1.2 million.
