Kansas Bans Hunting Feral Hogs

In an attempt to reduce the numbers of feral hogs, the Kansas legislature approved a ban to limit the hunting of feral hogs and the release of hogs into the wild.

Initially, state officials had hoped that allowing hunting of feral hogs would decrease their numbers in the wild. Unfortunately, it appears it had the opposite effect and resulted in the release of feral hogs so people could hunt them.

The new law will allow only land owners or their designee to kill feral hogs only after obtaining a permit from the state livestock commissioner. Three populations of feral hogs have been identified west of Pittsburgh, KS in Crawford County, on the Fort Riley Military Reservation in Riley and Geary counties, and along the tributaries of the Medicine Lodge River in Barber County.
