Canadian Pigs Keep Coming

According to USDA’s July Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook report, U.S. imports of live Canadian pigs increased 4 percent in May compared to last year.

Imports of live swine so far this year are up almost 11 percent, 3.5 million head, over the same period in 2005. Seventy percent of the imports ranged from 10 to 55 pounds and twenty-eight percent were slaughter-ready.

For 2006, swine imports are forecast at slightly more than 8.8 million head, with second-quarter imports of 2.1 million head anticipated, increasing to 2.3 million head in both the third and fourth quarters.
