Activists Submit Signatures for Arizona Initiative

Animal activist groups submitted 218,000 signatures to the Arizona Secretary of State in support of a proposed ballot initiative directed at banning sow gestation stalls and veal calf tethers.

Placing the initiative of the ballot requires at least 122,612 valid signatures from registered state voters. The secretary still must verify the validity of the signatures. If approved by the Arizona voters in November, the ban would take effect in 2012.

Opponents formed a coalition, the Campaign for Arizona Farmers and Ranchers, including Farm Bureau Federation, Arizona Cattlemen’s Association, United Dairymen of Arizona and the Arizona Pork Council to educate Arizona voters.
