Cattle in central and western China have been diagnosed with the Asia 1 serotype of the Foot and Mouth Disease virus (FMD).
The Agriculture Ministry reports that cattle in Changyang County in Hubei province and Jiayuguan in Gansu province began exhibiting clinical signs of FMD last week. The outbreak was confirmed by the state laboratory on May 29, 2006. Authorities have destroyed 13 cattle, 32 pigs and 7 sheep in Hubei and 35 cattle in Gansu as a preventative measure. Surrounding areas have also been quarantined and disinfected.
This report brings to 6 the number of Chinese provinces confirming FMD outbreaks since December 2005.
