FMD Continues Spread in Vietnam

Vietnam continues to struggle to control the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) which has stricken 22,500 pigs and cattle in 28 cities and provinces across the country.

Vaccination and additional control measures have been instituted and the government has offered financial assistance to farmers having to destroy their animals as a result of exposure to the virus. The government program will pay 70% of the value of the animals, $0.60(USD)/kg for pigs and $0.90(USD)/kg for cattle. The Department of Animal Health is striving to control the disease by 2010.
