AASV District 2 Representative Dr. Randy Jones Honored

Dr. Randy Jones of Kinston, NC, is the 2006 recipient of the Ben Harrington Award presented by the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at North Carolina State University to a professional veterinarian who provides "exemplary service as a role model and mentor" to veterinary students.

Dr. Jones, NCSU-CVM ’85, will receive the honor at the CVM awards dinner on April 27. A food animal veterinarian specializing in swine, Dr. Jones, of the Livestock Veterinary Services practice in Kinston, NC was also the recipient of AASV’s 1999 Swine Practitioner of the Year Award and a former president of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (1999-2000).

The award honors the memory of Dr. Ben Harrington who was instrumental in the creation of the NCSU-CVM in 1981, is considered the father of the CVM’s noted Teaching Animal Unit, was internationally known for his expertise in dairy medicine, nutrition, and mastitis management, and was a founding faculty member who served until his death in 1997. A major focus of Dr. Harrington’s professional and community activities included working with disadvantaged youth and students of all types.

Dr. Jones is the fourth recipient of the Ben Harrington Award. The three previous recipients are: Gene Nemecheck, Kansas State University CVM ’76; Richard Kirkman, NC State CVM ’91 and David Rives, NC State CVM ’85.
