CSF Diagnosed in Domestic Pigs in Germany

Two outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever (CSF, Hog Cholera) have been reported on pig farms located at Haltern am See in the North Rhine-Westphalia Land, Germany.

The outbreaks involve 575 susceptible animals. To date, there have been 84 deaths and 491 animals have been euthanized. The last report of CSF in Germany was in August, 2004 in a wild boar. The disease is known to reside in the feral swine population in certain parts of the country.

Control measures enacted include stamping out, movement restrictions in accordance with European Commission legislation, surveillance, zoning and disinfection of infected premises.
