Premium Standard Farms to Increase Hog Slaughter

Officials of Premium Standard Farms (PSF) have announced plans to increase the productivity of its Milan, MO slaughter facility by 2600 head per day.

The expansion, estimated to cost $23 million, is projected to be completed by spring 2007. It will bring the plant’s daily kill to 10,000 head and raise the company’s total capacity by about 15 percent. The additional hogs needed to supply the expansion will come from the company’s own Missouri and Texas farms and outside suppliers certified in PSF’s Process Verified Program (PVP).

According to the company’s website, PSF has received Process Verified Accreditation for their entire production and processing system. The PVP, based on the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 9000 guidelines, was introduced by the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (USDA-AMS) to enhance the competitive position of the livestock industry. The program is designed to assess quality management processes including traceability and relies on comprehensive documentation of all processes and procedures. Only those applicants who successfully complete program requirements are awarded Process Verified accreditation.
