The 9th International Conference on Emerging Zoonoses follows successful conferences, each of which provided an interdisciplinary forum for physicians, veterinarians, epidemiologists, immunologists, virologists, microbiologists, public health experts and others concerned with the ever increasing problems associated with the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans and the economic impact of transboundary diseases.

According to a recent report, only 3%-4% of new veterinary college graduates have entered food animal-related practices over the last 20 years, a 40% reduction from about 40 years ago.

The Framework for Interstate and Intrastate Movement Decisions During a Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak in the U.S. is the result of a two-year effort to build consensus and develop criteria for making animal movement decisions in the event of a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in the U.S. The document focuses on interstate and intrastate movement decisions by State Animal Health Officials; however, the recommendations may also be useful for movement decisions by producers and packers.

Registration Now Open for World Pork Expo 2024

Registration for the 2024 World Pork Expo is now open. This year’s Expo, brought to you by the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), will be held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 5 and 6. With its new two-day schedule, the Expo will be full of exciting activities and sessions from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day.

VMLRP Program Summary 2010 – 2022

Food animal veterinarians are critical to maintaining a healthy, secure, and safe food supply and for safeguarding the health and well-being of food animals. Today, there is a growing shortage of food animal veterinarians in both private and public practice, particularly in rural communities in the United States and Insular Areas. The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) supports mitigating food animal veterinary workforce shortages states and insular areas of the United States.

Comment Now: FDA Proposes New Regulations for Animal Drug Labeling

Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is proposing new regulations to provide animal drug sponsors with predictable requirements for the labeling of prescription and over-the-counter new animal drugs, as well as new animal drugs for use in animal feeds. The proposed content and format of labeling would also benefit veterinarians, animal owners, and animal producers by providing a more consistent presentation of information on the safe and effective use of these new animal drugs.

FDA Accepting Proposals for FY 2024-2025 Funding Opportunities to Collect Data on Antimicrobial Use in Animals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is accepting proposals through May 13, 2024 for cooperative agreement funding to support the collection of antimicrobial use data from diverse animal sectors. The cooperative agreements provide up to three awards in fiscal year (FY) 2024 for a total of $600,000, and up to five awards in FY 2025 for a total of $1,000,000. The funding opportunities are the FDA’s latest step toward collecting information about the use of antimicrobials in animals.
