Position Announcement: Veterinary Diagnostician

Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory seeks progressive food animal veterinarian with interest in advancing their career as a Veterinary Diagnostician.

Job Description:

The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. The caseload is diverse with swine representing the majority of submissions. This position serves to support diagnostic pathology case coordination and coordinate collaborative infectious disease outreach. Approximately 50% of professional time will include case coordination of diagnostic submissions as the primary diagnostic pathologist after appropriate training and proficiency is completed. These responsibilities include timely completion of case work, establishing effective lines of communication with submitting veterinarians, and presenting relevant information at professional or stakeholder meetings. As the primary diagnostic pathologist, duties include providing direct coordination (or co-coordination) on the diagnostic submissions from these clients and periodically spending time with practitioners in the field. Approximately 50% of professional time will include coordinating and conducting diagnostic investigations and testing associated with emerging swine pathogens (or syndromes) of interest to the ISU-VDL and animal health industry partners. Timely progress reports will be completed to report the findings of these diagnostic investigations. This role will involve diagnostic laboratory work cultivating and further characterizing pathogens being investigated. The successful candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills, project management skills, and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

DVM with three years of experience in food animal agriculture and/or food supply production medicine. Licensed in the US to practice veterinary medicine.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge and experience with food animal agriculture
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders in the food animal industry
  • Experience in delivery of veterinary services to swine sector
  • Experience in applied food animal infectious disease research
  • Experience in a progressive food animal veterinary practice

Salary is commensurate with qualifications
