Job Overview

The BTW/WTM Herd Veterinarian is responsible for supporting systems-based decisions as a liaison to the Breed-to-Wean(BTW) and Wean-to-Market(WTM) production units, providing technical expertise in health management including biosecurity; disease identification, prevention, control and treatment; regulatory and food safety requirements; and shares in fiduciary responsibility for health decisions. The role supports implementation of the Health Services (HS) vision through support of both business units. Services include gathering evidence in the form of subjective and objective observations and making recommendations to the WTM Business Unit Veterinarian and Production Operations on intervention options based on sound science. The leader ensures transparency of health information to all stakeholders by contributing to electronic health monitoring tools. Success requires routine communication with the WTM Business Unit Veterinarian providing updates on health strategy efficacy and identified threats to both BTW and WTM health management.

Job Duties & Accountabilities

Provide Technical Expertise in Supporting the WTM Business Unit Veterinarian

  • Work in a spirit of partnership with BTW and WTM leadership to provide timely, science-based recommendations to its short- and long-term health management strategy while demonstrating financial responsibility
  • Collaborate with WTM management and HS Director to align and prioritize WTM health education needs as a component of routine business planning
  • Serve as a technical resource to WTM development, review and training of protocols related to health management
  • Conduct routine monthly health visits to BTW operations and manage the associated regulatory compliance
  • Lead and actively participate in data collection, performance data analysis, and disease investigations
  • Engage in proactive biosecurity and education related to supply chain management and logistics
  • Make socially and fiscally responsible recommendations to BTW and WTM production operations leaders on intervention options preventing, controlling and treating disease which are based on sound science
  • Ensure TML compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and laws governing animal health and veterinary procedures in BTW and WTM

Minimum Qualifications

Education

DVM Degree from an accredited veterinary college and the ability to obtain licensure and USDA accreditation in IL, MO, IA, and NE.

Experience

Entry level, related veterinary college classroom, lab, and intern pig management experience and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in determined states in which TML has production involvement

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Veterinary medicine practices, principles and policies
  • Veterinary laws and compliance regulations
  • Pig production and health management
  • Industry standard animal well-being expectations

Skill in:

  • Communicating proficiently, both orally and in writing, and possessing the ability to adapt communication style to match the "readiness level" of the audience.
  • Applying scientific principles and business acumen to decision making processes
  • Working well both independently and in a team environment. Must be a self-starter.
  • Motivating others through coaching and feedback.

Ability to:

  • Provide individual contributions while also getting work done through others.
  • Perform technical skills related to swine medicine (necropsy and diagnostic sample collection).
  • Organize daily activities within the timeframe of operational deadlines.
  • Handle physical demands of lifting and securing animals.
